Daniel Casey, M.D.

Daniel Casey, M.D. is the Chief of Psychiatric Research/Psychopharmacology at the VA Medical Center and the Associate Director of Research at the Mental Illness Research, Education & Clinical Center. Dr. Casey also serves as Staff Psychiatrist at the VA Medical Center and as a Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at Oregon Health Sciences University.

Much of Dr. Casey's research has integrated the areas of academic-based research and education, FDA regulatory activities and international drug development. Dr. Casey has focused on clinical and pre-clinical studies in schizophrenia and treatment-related neurological side effects of acute extrapyramidal syndromes and tardive dyskinesia, as well as long-term glycemic and lipid side effects of atypical antipsychotic agents and their implications for the morbidity and mortality of schizophrenia.

Through his research and participation in clinical studies of various investigational and commercially available antipsychotic drugs, Dr. Casey aims to make advanced therapeutics available to treat disabling psychiatric disorders. In working toward this goal, Dr. Casey was an active member of the FDA Psychopharmacologic Drug Advisory Committee (1987-1992 and 1994-1997), where he served as Committee Chairman (1989 - 1992 and from 1996-1997). During these tenures many new drugs were reviewed and approved for ameliorating the suffering from psychiatric syndromes and improving the lives of patients.

After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Dr. Casey earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1972, also at the University of Virginia. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Oregon Medical School and at Brown University in 1976.

Dr. Casey has written numerous scientific journal articles, book chapters and abstracts, and has served as a reviewer for various scientific journals.
